Ran into a buddy at the ol’ hardware store in town
Asked what I been up to, cause he ain’t seen me around
Told him I’ve been working on something that I started years ago
Started as a bad idea, but over the years it’s grown

Left that store, headed back outta town
Got back home and tossed my new shovel on the ground
Jumped back in the hole that I started digging years ago
Never thought I’d still be digging that hole some more

I’m getting too old to be climbing in and out of that hole
Got dirt on my boots, blisters on my hands, and a worn out soul
With every scoop of dirt, the bottom gets farther from the top
But it seems like I keep making choices that won’t let me stop

I got it dug a little deeper than my waist
Looking around, dirt thrown all over the place
Like my life, the dirt’s scattered all around
Into the night, I’m still digging my hole in the ground

As the years go by it gets much deeper, I can barely see over the edge
As I toss dirt up above me, some falls down on my head
The hole gets deeper each day, and each day I pray I can stop
But I keep digging that dirt, till I can’t see out the top

I claw at the sides, panicked and sweaty, hoping to get myself free
But the harder I try, the harder it gets, to set my soul free
The choices I made, started this hole, that I dug myself into
Ain’t nobody around to hear my screams and help me through

Should’ve quit diggin’ back when I could still see the sky
Now the sun feels like a memory, just passin’ by
Now the silence is heavy, and the walls close in tight
And I pray to the Lord just to make it through the night

I’m getting too old to be climbing in and out of that hole
Got dirt on my boots, blisters on my hands, and a worn out soul
With every scoop of dirt, the bottom gets farther from the top
But it seems like I keep making choices that won’t let me stop

Maybe one day I’ll get to stop diggin’, lay that shovel down for good
Climb out and wash this dirt off, like I know I really should
But until then, I’ll be down here, just a man in a hole alone
Diggin’ through the weight of all the bad choices I’ve made on my own
