Chapter One had muddy boots and bruised-up knees
Running through the fields, climbin’ backyard trees
Mama’s voice rang out at suppertime
And Daddy’s belt kept me walkin’ the line
A little wild, but I meant no harm
Just a boy growin’ up on a little farm
First love, first fight, first real prayer
A few lost dogs and some truth learned there
Chapter Five wore camo and boots laced tight
I left home young, head full of fight
Desert sun, letters from home
A thousand miles, but never alone
I saw things I’ll never quite unsee
And brought ghosts back that still ride with me
But I stood by my brothers, held the line
That chapter carved deep into my spine
The book’s cover was starting to show some wear
But I didn’t really mind
It was pulled off the shelf 20 years before
And I’ve carried it since that time
Finally finished this story
It’s been a good book
Pages are torn and weathered
Go ahead and take a look
The book may look rough
But I read it from the start
A story about wins, losses
N’ stories of the heart
Now the book’s come to a close
Never thought I’d get this far
But here I am at the end
Still wishin’ for one more chapter to start
Hope the story in your book
Is as good as mine
“Cause given another chance
I’d read mine one more time
Chapter Eleven was her in white
Sunset vows and a kiss goodnight
Built a life on faith and worn-down boots
Had more love than we had roots
Then came babies with sleepy eyes
Late night lullabies and middle of the night cries
Watched ’em grow, fall, stand again
Wrote those lines with a trembling pen
Chapter Seventeen, the pages got thin
Hospitals, silence, the fight within
Watched my best friend fade away slow
Prayed to God not to let him go
Mama passed on a winter day
And the sun just refused to stay
I learned then what goodbye really meant
Some chapters end with the pages bent
The book is looking rougher
It’s surely showing it’s age
But I crack that ol’ book open
Looking forward to the next page
No chapter perfect, some I’d rewrite
Some were wrong, some turned out right
But every page, I lived full on
And I’d relive ’em all, now that they’re gone
Finally finished this story
It’s been a good book
Pages are torn and weathered
Go ahead and take a look
The book may look rough
But I read it from the start
A story about wins, losses
And stories of the heart
Now the book’s come to a close
Never thought I’d get this far
But here I am at the end
Still wishin’ for one more chapter to start
Hope the story in your book
Is as good as mine
“Cause given another chance
I’d read mine one more time
Now I sit here in the fading light
My grandkids laughing just outta sight
I close the worn out cover with a grateful sigh
Not afraid, just not ready for goodbye
It’s ’bout time this ol’ worn out book
Goes back up to where it belongs
On the shelf with all the other books
Of all the other stories that are done
Books with stories of love, stories of pain
Placed on the shelf by others that
wish they could read them again
Hope the story in your book
Is as good as mine
“Cause if the good lord gave me another chance
I’d read mine one more time
